While they have always been a band to experiment with dance, hip-hop and electro elements, ‘One More Light’ is a step too far with disastrous results. Then there’s ‘One More Light’, Linkin Park’s seventh studio outing. Three years later, the band are singing a very much different tune.įirst of all, there are the much-publicised comments of vocalist Chester Bennington telling fans to “move the fuck on” from their 2000 debut. If this is really the end, at least we know it was a beautiful one.With their 2014 album, ‘The Hunting Party’, Linkin Park promised a return to the rap-rock sound that made them a multi-million-selling band they became with ‘Hybrid Theory’. Strong final words of wisdom and long-lasting advice from the people a several generations grew up with. The album seems like a subconscious farewell.

It feels like watching the last episode of your favourite TV show – emotional, heavy, you don’t want it to end, but you know that you have to accept it. Somebody else could be stepping in front of youĪ sense of tragedy, melancholy, and completeness radiates from One More Light. The incredible wordplay and metaphors strike hard and radiate self-love, appreciation, confidence, and powerful claim of ground.
The song uses fouling in basketball as a metaphor for the end of a relationship. Good Goodbye is a dynamic and energetic track uniting Chester’s singing and Mike’s raps while also adding the unique touch of Pusha Tand Stormzy. The natural process of grieving and accepting loss in different stages – anger, unfairness, mental demolition, peace, and serenity, also take frontal parts. Seeing the brilliance of individuals and their role in other people’s lives might be the biggest takeaway of One More Light. Just ’cause you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it, isn’t there In the kitchen, one more chair than you need, ohĪnd you’re angry, and you should be, it’s not fair The reminders, pull the floor from your feet The track depicts the emptiness left after a person disappears and how hard it can be to cope with that change. Amy‘s passing triggered a realization of how much importance a person can have in your life. It started as a dedication to Amy Zaret, a close friend and collaborator of Linkin Park who worked at Warner. One More Light went through several metamorphoses after the release. The acoustic guitar and piano successfully create an atmosphere preparing listeners for the outpour of emotions. The title track certainly stands as the heaviest, most emotional song the band ever created. In one way or another, this album is a mirror of that. One More Light focuses on overwhelmingly heavy topics and real-life crises that we all eventually face. We were reminded that, while we are at the mercy of the world around us, sometimes the only thing we have control over is our reaction. Relationships began and ended babies were born and people died. There were celebrations, mistakes, accidents, recoveries.

The path the band walked from Hybrid Theory to the last album depicts individual development and professional evolution like few other discographies. It is an extraordinary album not only because it is (maybe) the last we will ever see from one of the world’s most important music collectives but because it represents a fascinating transformation. One More Light is a collection of personal stories, contemplations, expressions of pain, and learned lessons anchored to the band’s real lives – a demonstration of love, tragedy, celebration, hope, strength, and vulnerability. Sometimes for us, it was like, ‘We know we’re going to make a lot of people go, ‘What the heck is this? Who is this?’, ‘What the fuck happened to my band? Chester for Rocksound We’re pretty confident, even if it may be shocking to some people – or even everybody at first. As long as it comes from a pure place and it’s something that we pour our hearts and souls into, we can deal with what happens from that point forward. I t doesn’t matter what style we write in. The heavy focus on pop sounds and minimal instrumentals also diversified it from the rest of their discography.īut what made it recognizable as Linkin Park’s work was the penetrating emotional substance, relevant topics, and thought-provoking lines from start to end.
